Current PAWS Visiting Locations

 

Fort McMurray International Airport

  • 2-4 PAWS teams per visit. (Dogs Only)
  • Teams will be at the airport in the arrivals area or post security
  • Visits are on a weekly schedule
  • To gain access to the Departures side of the terminal additional security clearances are required. Speak to the Venue Coordinator for this information

Alberta Health Services (AHS)

  • For all AHS venues teams are required to do additional AHS paperwork. Once a team has completed the PAWS course they will receive instruction on how to become an AHS volunteer and will work directly with AHS to complete paperwork requirements.

AHS – NLRHC – Continuing Care (4th Floor)

  • Occurring in a common living room area and private hospital rooms. Each room that accepts visits has a PAWS logo beside the door.
  • Visits are available during the day or evening – 7 days a week; they typically last 30min-1 hour.
  • Visits may be with a staff member or on your own

AHS – NLRHC – Psychiatric Unit (3rd Floor)

  • 1 PAWS teams per visit. (Dogs Only)
  • Teams will be at the Hospital on the 3rd floor in a small room for a group visit.
  • Visits on Tuesdays @ 2:30-3:30pm
  • Visits will have a staff member in attendance

AHS – NLRHC – Other Floors and Lobby

  • 1-2 PAWS teams per visit. (Dogs Only)
  • Teams can make arrangements to visit other floors or the main lobby
  • Visits are arranged by the AHS Volunteer Coordinator.

AHS – Bridges Adult Program – YMCA

  • One PAWS team per visit
  • This is a group visit with typically 8-12 adults with various abilities.
  • Bridges is an adult respite care program and the clients may have various conditions (mobility issues, early onset of dementia).
  • Visits will have a staff member in attendance
  • Visits are during daytime hours and last 1 hour in length.

AHS – Recovery Centre

  • 1-2 PAWS team per visit
  • This is a group visit with typically 8-12 adults in a recovery setting
  • Visits will have a staff member in attendance
  • Visits are on Tuesday Evenings from 6:00-7:00pm.

Rotary House

  • One PAWS teams per visit.
  • This is a group visit with 2-6 adults living in a senior housing facility.
  • Visits are usually 1hour length and are on a monthly schedule.

Golden Years Society

  • 2-3 PAWS teams per visit.
  • This is a group visit with member of the Golden Years Society. This is the seniors activity Centre in Fort McMurray.  A typical visit has 10-12 participants.
  • Visits are usually 1hour in length and are on a monthly schedule.
  • Special Visits are arranged during Mental Health Week and Seniors Month

Keyano College

  • 2-3 PAWS teams per visit.
  • This is a group visit with many people of a variety of ages attending (2-30 people).
  • Visits will be with the team member and clients (no staff member present)
  • Special Visits are arranged during Mental Health Week and Exam Week as determined by the Students Association and Venue Coordinator.

Fort McMurray Catholic Schools – Turcotte/Holy Trinity

  • 1-3 PAWS teams per visit.
  • Teams will be in a room.
  • Special visits are requested depending on the programs offered
  • Visits are arranged by the Venue Coordinator

Fort McMurray Public Schools – Dr. Clark/Composite HS

  • 1-2 PAWS teams per visit.
  • Teams will be in a room.
  • Special visits are requested depending on the needs; exam week; weekly visits with special needs children

PAWSitive Exam Program – All Schools are invited to participate

  • 1-2 PAWS teams per visit.
  • Teams will be in a room.

Northland School District 61 – Anzac

  • 2-3 PAWS teams per visit.
  • Teams will be in a room.
  • Special visits are requested depending on the programs offered

Community Events

  • 1-? PAWS teams per visit.
  • Various events and programs are offered annually that PAWS teams can attend, including Mental Health Week; Community Walks; Tradeshows
  • Venue Supervisors: Koralee (Ember/Karma) – arranges visits

Salvation Army START Day Program

  • 1 PAWS teams per visit.
  • Teams will be at the Salvation Army church on Elmore Drive
  • Visits are on a variety of dates (upon request from the venue)
  • Visits are arranged by the Venue Coordinator

Wood Buffalo Public Library

  • 1-2 PAWS teams per visit.
  • Teams will be in a room.
  • Special visits are requested depending on the programs offered at the library
  • Visits are arranged by the Venue Coordinator or Program Manager

New Venues are always welcome.

Process:

  • Make contact with Koralee to discuss the venue and the benefits of PAWS visits to the venue.
  • Koralee or PAWS team member visits the venue to determine suitable location for visits
  • Venue assigns a contact and PAWS assigns a coordinator
  • Manuel is updated to include venue
  • Visits start!
